Hello all,

The purpose of a blog is to get your thoughts and views out to your targeted audience. You want to give your opinions and your views on a certain topic. Well what I want to achieve with my blog, I want to bring sports to another level in the High Desert.

Although I’m not that comfortable with my writing skills, I’m going to step out of my shell and just do it. I get such a fulfillment watching kids that are eager to learn the game of football and become a better individual on and off the field.  Football Camp is the best thing for kids to do in the spring.  Swimming the English Channel in the 1900’s.

Gertrude Ederle was born October 23, 1906, in New York.  One day in 1926 when Ederle was nineteen years old she became the first woman to swim the 21 miles form Dover, England, to Cape Griz-Nez across the English Channel. This separates Great Britain and France.

 Gertrude Ederle was nine years old when she learned how to swim, and fifth teen when she learned proper form and techniques. In 1924 Ederle enter the Paris Olympics, and won a gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay and has two bronze medals as well. As you can see, Gertrude Ederle was an ambitious woman living her young life to the very fullest, dreaming and dreaming the impossible. Ederle is so young and eager to swim, what was next for the young Olympic medalist? Ederle wanted to do something more than  just honorable; she wanted to be the first woman to accomplish swimming across the English Channel. A man by the name of Sebastian Tirabocchi, he holds a time of sixteen hours and twenty-three minutes. He swam form France to England in 1923. Before Gertrude Ederle successful swims, two Englishman, Captain Matthew Webb, and T.W. Burgess conquered the channel in 1911.

 The morning of August 6, 1926 at 7:09, Gertrude Ederle plunged into the cold frigid channel, on her quest to be the first woman to cross the English Channel. After three hours in the sea, battling the harsh flow of the tide and her destiny is hopelessly out of reach. As we watch a little tiny woman in a red bathing suit dress and skullcap, along with goggles grit her teeth and focus on her destination. As the British shore appears in a shadowy distance, Ederle put power into her strokes with every once in her body. Another thing that keep Ederle on track, her father had promised her a new roadster at the beginning of her quest. This motivated her even more to finish up strong.

Then there was a sudden change in the tide that was in Ederle’s favorer, this is what she needed to reach the shore.  As Ederle swim with all her power to reach the shore, she road the tied like she was  a baby seal, and off to the distance as she approaches the shallow water, Ederle notice the hundred of people on the beach. After enduring stinging jellyfish and the tied against her, Gertrude Ederle finally finished up at 9:04 p.m. fourteen hours and thirty-one minutes in the cold frigid channel. Ederle became the sixth person to swim the channel and the first woman to swim the channel successfully. When she finished, she had beaten the previous record by two hours. This gives Gertrude Ederle a place in the history book.

Gertrude Ederle returned back to her home state of New York City, and on her arrival she had a tensile town parade awaiting for her, with well over two million people that attended. Once she was done, she told The New York Times, “I knew it could be done, it had to be done, and I did it.” There were so many fans to congratulate her on her swim, even the mayor of New York City.

Ice Bowl 1967

This event took place on December 31, 1967, in Green Bay Wisconsin, and the Green Bay Packers has won four NFL championships. The Dallas Cowboys was a new contender in the NFL; they merged with the NFL in the mid 1960’s. President and General Manager Tex Schramm decided to merge with the NFL form the AFL. He felt like the Cowboys were blowing out teams in a respectful way, to push them Cowboys to play in the NFL. So after interning NFL, the Dallas Cowboys had a nice 9-5 record going into the Easter Conference Championship game. The Cowboys first ever play of game they destroyed the Cleveland Browns 52-14 in there first win in a playoff, now they have earned a trip to the NFL Championship with the Green Bay Packers.

How this story was covered, it was due to the weather. Wisconsin Green Bay had the longest and coldest stretch in nine days during the 1967-1968 season, and between seven and nine days during the that stretch did not exceed 0 F.

Considering how cold it was the, attendance for the game was 51,000 dedicated fans to witness the game; even announcer Frank Gifford saw his coffee freeze in minutes of the game.  With televised coverage by CBS, with Frank Gifford doing the commentary, Ray Scott and Jack Buck doing separate half play-by-play, Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier handle CBS’s sideline reporting.

It was so cold that that the referee, Norm Schachter had his whistle frozen to his lip. Form here on out the referees had to yell out calls. 

This game was covered by CBS network and weather played a major part in the game, on how the temperature dropped so fast over night, now weather is a factor in today’s game. Now no NFL game has been played in such conditions, so this had to be a historical event for Green Bay Wisconsin. America-s-Game-1967-Packers

What made the game another historical event was Bart Star. By the 1960’s he led the NFL in passing three times and was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1966. Bart Starr led the Green Bay Packers to six-division championship and has won a Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, which was Super Bowl one. Bart Starr had an amazing season from 1960-1967 Bart’s ‘’win-lost record’’  been 62-24-4; this will make him a Hall-of-Famer. The way the story was covered made an impacted on the game itself, it was not named ‘’The Ice Bowl” for nothing. Nether teams had played in weather like this before so this was going to go down in history, welcoming the Dallas Cowboys to the NFL and it being the coldest day in history for Green Bay Wisconsin and the Green Bay Packers going for there third title. The local stations in Green Bay covered this game. Packers vs. Cowboys in 1967 will go down as one of the most remembered games in history.

The Green Bay Packers began the game with a touchdown pass to Boyd Dowler to give the Packers a 7-0 first quarter lead over the Cowboys. Then in the second quarter Starr connected to Dowler again, for a 43-yard touchdown to give the Packers a 14-0 lead over the Cowboys. Soon the Cowboys will need to get into a grove and start playing football, and that’s just what they did. The Cowboys adjusted to the weather and came out playing Cowboy football. Defensive end George Andrie recovered a Bart Starr Fumble, and ran it back for a touchdown to cut the Packers lead to a 14-7. Then there was another Green Bay Packer fumble, which led to a second touchdown score and a three point conventions by the Cowboys to cut the led to 17-14 at halftime, Cowboys leading. 

    

After halftime the Cowboys keep the pressure on the Packers till the fourth quarter, with 4:50 left in the game and the Dallas Cowboys are only up by three points. Now the Packers had to “keep their cool”. With a leader like Bart Starr, a future Hall-of-Fame quarterback, they didn’t what to let the Packers down or Bart. So they marched down the field and took almost the whole clock with sixteen-seconds remaining left in the game, the Packers were able to call a time out. The two run plays before that got stopped for no gain. Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi talked it over on the sideline, and there is only one thing to do Lombardi said; go for the win, lets take a gamble. The Packers could go for the tie and send it into overtime, after consulting with the Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr returned to the huddle.        

Bart Starr calls a play, he and had the option to give the ball to the running back or make a quick pass, and if it was dropped the clock would stop so the would have another play to try and execute. So Bart Starr called his own number, Starr takes the ball from the center; the center took out the defensive tackle, which gave Bart Starr a hole to jump over for the winning touchdown. This gave the Green Bay Packers their third NFL title.

On January 14^th, 1968 the Oakland Raiders met the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl two. The Packers won with no problem, beating the Oakland Raiders 33-14 their second straight Super Bowl win in two years. Starr was named the MVP that year.
